TheLake Mills Dance Club was formed in 1951 as a way for newcomers to the community to become better acquainted. Dances were held at the local high school band room, now the lower room in the middle school gym. They were formal events, similar to the school’s prom. A non-alcoholic punch was the only refreshment served.
There were 25 charter members but the club quickly expanded to 50 couples by 1953. At that time, pre-dance cocktail parties, hosted by various members, were popular. However, by the early 1960’s, with membership continuing to increase, the intimate cocktail gatherings gave way to the concept of cocktails/dinner/dance at area golf clubs and restaurants. The structure also changed from 6 dances annually, held every other month, to only 3 or 4 per year. Although less formal, the club today is similar to what it was in the ‘60’s.
